Invasive Species

Definition An invasive species is any species that is not native to an ecosystem and whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health Aquatic invasive species (AIS) is simply an invasive species which has been introduced into an aquatic ecosystem, either freshwater or marine.

Mechanisms of dispersal Ballast water Release of invasive spp. from aquaria Boat hitch hikers Fishing (release of live bait)

What are some of the main problems that can be caused when AIS are introduced? · Fouling of boats, docks, water intake pipes, fishing equipment, and other objects in the water · Interference with navigation and water control structures · Introduction of new diseases · Competition with and predation of native species · Reduced water quality (lowered dissolved oxygen levels, increased pH, or decreased light levels for native species) · Decreased biodiversity in the ecosystem · Discouragement of recreational boaters, anglers, and tourists from using infested waterways, impacting local economies
