Monsoon - A wind system in which winds blow in a southwesterly direction, causing rain in the Asian region during May to September. They blow in a northeasterly direction during November to January, causing rains in some parts of Asia. Monsoons denotes two seasons. It has two principal seasons of trade winds blowing from the northeast for six months and the southwest for another six months. In South Asia, monsoons are characterized by a strong onshore flow in the summer and a somewhat less pronounced offshore flow in the winter. The illustration shows the monsoon wind pattern over the Indian subcontinent. Southwest monsoon.Northeast monsoon.
