"Some people like to paint trees. I like to paint love. I find it more meaningful than painting trees." ~Robert Indiana

Robert Indiana (1928- ) His birth name was Robert Clark. Born in Indiana he gave himself the “nom de brush” Robert Indiana. Before he was 17 years old he had lived in 21 different houses. His parents thought he was a good artist but told him if he made it his career he would have to survive by “eating beans and living in a garrett.” He says his parents were right… … at first!

His first grade teacher encouraged him. She saved his work, saying that when he was a famous artist, she would have some of his original work. He is best known for his sign- like paintings and sculptures. He also likes poetry.

Words and numbers were important to Robert. His father worked for Phillips 66. He spent a lot of time on the road looking at signs. His mother worked in restaurants with neon signs. He often uses the colors red and green (the colors of his father’s truck).

Robert Indiana feels his job as an artist is to make words and numbers very, very special. How special has he made them? His HOPE sculpture made its debut at the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

In 1973 Indiana designed the LOVE stamp for the U.S. Postal Service. Over 320,000,000 of the stamps were printed.

His Style Uses lots of bold colors, especially red, white and blue.

He uses blocks of color.

His paintings and sculptures resemble signs.

He found stencils in his studio and began using the stencil look in his artwork.

He uses letters and numbers.
