What is Weather? Weather is what the air is like at a certain time and place.
What is the atmosphere? The atmosphere is a blanket of gases and tiny bits of dust that surround the Earth.
What is precipitation?
Precipitation is water that falls to the ground from the atmosphere as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
How do we predict weather?
Scientists use special tools to gather data. The data they collect is used to predict future weather.
Weather Tools – Rain Gauge A rain gauge measures the amount of precipitation.
Weather Tools – Weather Vane A weather vane points out wind and direction.
Weather Tools - Anemometer Wind is the movement of air. An anemometer measures how fast the air is moving (wind speed).
Weather Tools - Barometer A barometer measures air Pressure.
Weather Instruments - Thermometer A thermometer measures the temperature. Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold something is.
