© Dr MKAJ -SMJ 3513 Lecture 1 DESIGN: An Overview

© Dr MKAJ -SMJ 3513 What is Design? Everyone is directly or indirectly involved in Design:  Planning  Execute  Refine

© Dr MKAJ -SMJ 3513 Some Definitions “Engineering design is the process of devising a system, component, or process to meet desired needs. It is a decision making process (often iterative), in which the basic sciences, mathematics, and engineering sciences are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective.” ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) “Engineering design is a purposeful activity directed toward the goal of fulfilling human needs, particularly those which can be met by the technological factors of our culture.” Asimow, M., Introduction to Design, Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, 1962

© Dr MKAJ -SMJ 3513 Why Design? “Need” satisfying

© Dr MKAJ -SMJ 3513 Human Needs COMPLEX: Vary across cultures, gender, age groups, income level, climates, etc Changes over time – different products over time

© Dr MKAJ -SMJ 3513 Process of satisfying… “It is a process of searching for solutions to satisfy human needs that requires right methods/techniques”  Correct understanding of NEEDS  CREATIVE and INNOVATIVE Solutions  QUALITY achievement

© Dr MKAJ -SMJ 3513 CREATIVE vs. INNOVATIVE CREATIVE – having the ability to produce new and original ideas and things (that may or may not be useful) INNOVATIVE – having the ability to introduce something new, like an idea, or method or invention (that is often useful)
