What is biology? Study of life

Characteristics of life 1.Made of one or more cells 2.Displays organization 3. Grows and develops 4. Reproduces 5. Responds to stimuli 6. Requires energy 7. Maintain homeostasis 8. Adaptations evolve over time

Characteristics of life 1.Made of one or more cells a.Basic unit of life – exhibit all characteristics of life b.Unicellular – one cell c.Multicellular – many cells

2. Displays organization a.Arranged in an orderly way b.Cells have many parts that contribute to whole

Characteristics of life 3. Grows and develops a. Add mass or more cells b. Develop – natural changes during the life of organism 4. Reproduces a. Produce offspring – pass on DNA!! b. Reproduce as a species not individual

5. Responds to stimuli a. React to factors outside/inside organism b. Plants and sun c. Predators/prey

6. Maintain homeostasis a. Keeping internal conditions stable/within a tolerable range Human body temperature is……… F if body temperature rises, you sweat. F if body temperature lowers, you shiver.

7. Requires energy ***Metabolism - biochemical reactions that acquire & use energy Why do organisms need energy? How do organisms obtain energy?

8. Adapts over time a. inherited changes that occur over time

A Short Quiz: 1. What are the characteristics of life? 2. What is homeostasis? What is an example of homeostasis? 3. Is a computer living? Why or why not? Is a virus living? 4. Why is energy required by living things?

Life is Diverse Biodiversity refers to the many different types of organisms on earth. Taxonomy is the biological science that classifies life according to evolutionary relationships. The Domain is the largest group of organisms.

What is Life: Martian and the Car Below is a description of a car Marty the Martian believes to be alive. From his description give examples of why the car is and is not alive. At the trial, Marty spoke in his defense. "I first saw these life forms rolling along roads in great numbers. They were giving off thick clouds of poisonous waste as they moved. They seemed to exhibit herding behavior, as many of the cars moved in the same direction. They appeared to have a great deal of energy, some of them moved faster than 75 miles per hour. When one of these life forms stopped or slowed down, the others behind it responded. They slowed down and gave off a reddish light from the back, and sometimes they would make honking noises. I observed that they would stop to feed on a liquid substance."
