Articles of Confederation Successes Isabel Arnade

Revolutionary War -Articles of Confederation kept the colonies united during the war -Lead to the Treaty of Paris: ●treaty between Great Britain and the United States, signed on September 3, 1783 ●negotiated by Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, Henry Laurens, and John Adams ●ended the American Revolutionary War ●essentially, acknowledged the colonies as "free, sovereign and independent" from British control

Land Ordinance of After treaty of Paris, several existing states claimed the lands of the Northwest Territory ●under the Articles of Confederation, Congress could not tax the United States inhabitants, only states could tax o goal was to raise money through the sale of this land -the Land Ordinance of 1785: how the US government would divide and distribute the land north and west of the Ohio River (acquired from Great Britain after the Revolutionary War) -help pay off war debts

Northwest Ordinance of passed July 13, created the Northwest Territory and a basis for the government of this territory - slavery was outlawed in these new lands -guaranteed the addition of new states would be equal to the original thirteen
