What is the best approach, in the context of creating a bully-free workplace, to the behaviour of a person who is identified as a “serial bully”?

“Bullying in the workplace constitutes a real threat to the safety, health and welfare of people in the workplace.” (Health and Safety Authority, Code of Practice on the Prevention of Workplace Bullying, 2002)

How should schools approach the drafting of procedures to prevent and tackle bullying and what role might outside agencies have in facilitating this?

“A consistent thread in our review of the weaknesses of the current state lies in the matter of closure.” (Expert Advisory Group on Workplace Bullying, 2005 Report).

Should bullying/harassment in the workplace be more subjectively defined? Should dignity at work/bullying issues be encompassed in a school’s safety statement? What are the key elements of procedures or policies to prevent or to tackle poor working relationships which have their background in workplace bullying?

Should schools’ equality policies specifically deal with harassment/bullying behaviour and list the nine grounds? Dignity at Work Issue: Is this positive approach a suitable one for schools as workplaces, and who should be asked to subscribe to such a charter? What are the costs to schools of dealing with workplace bullying issues and to what extent should schools model good behaviour and practice in this regard?

What is the best approach, in the context of creating a bully-free workplace, to the behaviour of a person who is identified as a “serial bully”? How should schools approach the drafting of procedures to prevent and tackle bullying and what role might outside agencies have in facilitating this? What are the main options for a teacher who is seeking to “move on” following an episode of workplace bullying?
