First Cause 1. Nationalism Definition: Extreme loyalty to one's country Example that created jealousy Newly formed Germany wanted to be the best nation in Europe Germany whooped on France in 1871 and took the valuable Alsace-Lorraine region

Second Cause 2. Militarism Definition: Aggressive buildup of military (conscription: Military Draft) Example :Germany competed with England for the best navy in the world German U-boat

Third Cause 3. Imperialism: Definition: Controlling a weaker country Example created jealousy: Competition in Africa and Asia

Fourth Cause 4. System of Alliances: Definition: Choosing "friends“ Example: There were TWO sides: The Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy Triple Entente: Russia, Gr. Brit, and France Later on Italy Switches sides And The Ottoman Empire joins Austria Hungry

The Spark that Set off the War The assassination of heir to the Throne of Austria-Hungary, Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife By 1914, Serbia (being supported by Russia) was determined to create a large Slavic state. A group of radical terrorists wanted Bosnia to be free from the Austrian- Hungary empire and be apart of that state. Gavrilo Princip, of the Black Hand, shot and killed both the Archduke and his wife.

Outbreak of War!!! This leads to an Outbreak of war in Europe, Serbia refuses Austria- Hungary’s demands, declares war on them, Russia backs Serbia, declares war on A-H, Germany Backs A-H declares War on Russia, France backs Russia, Etc.

Schlieffen Plan A military plan designed by General Alfred von Schlieffen. It called for a two front war with France and Russia. According to this plan, Germany would conduct a small holding action against Russia, while most of German forces would invade and conquer France. In order to invade France needed to go through Belgium. This violated the Belgium neutrality act and Britain declares war on Germany By Aug. 4 th 1914 All Great Powers Of Europe were at WAR!!!
