How to Design an Effective PowerPoint Presentation 4U Academic Integrity Grade 12 English

Layout: 10 PowerPointPresentation Tips PowerPoint’s main screen Getting started in PowerPoint Formatting the Background of your Slides Slide layouts Different Viewing Options Inserting pictures and text Inserting Charts and Graphs Slide transition and Slide animation Adding sound, animation, video, hyperlinks Viewing and Navigating the SLIDE SHOW Summary The Assignment

10 PowerPointPresentation Tips Apply brilliance – Use colours to highlight your points. But, don’t weaken your message by including too much on one slide. KISS – Keep It Straight and Simple. Use Keywords. Make an attempt not to read your slides directly. Compose slides – Don’t copy and paste from a bunch of different places. Use consistency – Choose the same colours and font styles throughout. This includes the background template. Use contrast – Black on white is always the most effective and most boring choice. But, whatever your choice don’t make your audience strain. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-tips-for-preparing-a-professional-presentation/

10 PowerPointPresentation Tips Take Home Messages – What you want the audience to leave with; a summary. Use Images – Not just to decorate, but to exhibit or explain. Don’t be silly – Overusing animations and media. Use them to clarify and model your ‘take home point’. Keep your audience in mind – Nothing else already covered matters if you lose the attention of your audience. Practice – Know the slides. Edit the slides. Speak to the audience. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-tips-for-preparing-a-professional-presentation/

PowerPoint’s Main Screen Main Menu Toolbar Formatting Toolbar Standard Toolbar Viewing Options

Getting Started With PowerPoint Once you open the PowerPoint program, choose Blank Presentation and click OK. Using the MicroSoft PowerPoint’s Template is always an option. At this point, you can select the slide layout that you would like to start off with or select the type of design that you would like to apply to your presentation. Be sure to keep in mind the 10 PowerPointPresentation Tips.

Getting Started with PowerPoint Choose Format from the main menu and select Slide Design. Backgrounds that are dark in colour can be the best to choose because they are easier to see when showing your presentation. Use contrast. Once you select the slide layout (title slide), when you are ready to select another slide, choose Insert from the main menu and choose New Slide or ctrl M.

Slide Layouts Title slide, bulleted list, 2 column text, table, text & chart, chart & text, organizational chart, text & clipart, clip art & text, title only, blank slide.

Formatting The Background Of A Slide You can format your slide to make it look however you would like, whether it be a background colour, picture, or a design template built into Microsoft PowerPoint. 1. Click format at the top of the screen. 2. Select Apply Design Template 3. Select the Design as you wish. 4. Click the Apply button

Different Viewing Options Normal view Outline View Slide view Slide Sorter View Slide Show View

Different Viewing Options Slide View – allows you to work on one slide at a time Outline View – allows you to work with the structure of your file in outline form. Work in outline view when you need to organize the structure of your file. Slide Sorter View - displays miniature versions of all slides in a presentation, complete with text and graphics. In slide sorter view, you can reorder slides, add transitions, and animation effects. You can also set the timings for electronic slide shows. Notes Page View – allows you to work on one slide at a time or organize the structure of all the slides in your presentation. Here you will also be able to add notes for your presentation. Slide Show - runs your slide show in full screen format, beginning with the current slide if you are in slide view or the selected slide if you are in slide sorter view.

Inserting Pictures And Text 1. Display the slide you want to add a picture to. 2. Click INSERT from the top of the screen. 3. Select Picture, then select Clip Art. 4. Click the category you want. 5. Click the picture you want. 6. Click Insert Clip on the shortcut menu. 7. Click the close button on the Clip Gallery Title bar. Steps 1-3 are very similar when inserting other Pictures, objects, movies, sounds and charts, graphs or tables. When you start, you should create a file folder which contains everything used in the construction of the PowerPoint Presentation (text files, images, media, etc.).

Slide Transition You can add customized transitions to your slide show that will make it come alive and become appealing to your audience. Follow these steps when adding Slide Transitions. In slide or slide sorter view, select the slide or slides you want to add a transition to. On the Slide Show menu at the top of the screen, click Slide Transition

Slide Transition Cont’d In the Effect box, click the transition you want, and then select any other options you want. To apply the transition to the selected slide, click Apply. To apply the transition to all the slides, click Apply to All. Repeat the process for each slide you want to add a transition to. To view the transitions, on the Slide Show menu, click Animation Preview.

Slide Animation To animate a graphic or text individually and include sound. Select Slide Show from the main menu and select Custom Animation. Here you will find many effects that you can add to either a graphic or the basic text. You can also select the direction of the animation and the speed of the effect. The animation selected for this slide is ‘stretch’ and the speed is ‘slow’. It is the only item that is animated on this screen.

Adding Sound, Music, Movies And Hyperlinks To add sound to your presentation, select slide show custom animation and select sound with the animation that you have preset. To add music, movies and sound to your presentation, select Insert and choose movies and sounds. You have a few options here from where you get your files. To add hyperlinks that will take you directly to the Internet (as long as you have an internet connection) select Insert, choose hyperlinks and type in the web address of your information (actually easier to copy and paste during construction).

Viewing the Slide Show You can view your slide show by any of the following ways: Click Slide Show at the lower left corner of Power Point On the Slide Show menu, view Slide Show On the View menu, click Slide Show

Navigating while in the Slide Show Forward Navigation Simply click on the left Mouse Button or hit the Enter Button on the keyboard Reverse Navigation Hit the backspace key on the keyboard Exiting the Show Hit the Esc button on the keyboard You can advance your slides by clicking the mouse button, using a remote, using the space bar or the arrow keys!

Summary Create a file folder for each presentation you are creating. Keep everything for that particular presentation in that same folder: charts, graphs, music, sound, etc.. Understand – Different effects were used in this presentation to demonstrate options and points. Keep a balance with media effects; overdoing it can be very easy and leads to a less successful presentation. Use this presentation to help guide your PowerPoint. But, don’t be afraid of experimenting.

The Assignment The class will be divided into three to five groups. Using information from ‘the web’, and further information provided by the classroom teacher, each group will be responsible for creating a PowerPoint Presentation on one of the aspects/roles students should be aware of and practice concerning consistent and acceptable academic integrity. Once all groups have completed their presentation they will then share with the rest of the class/groups.
