A final word of caution: There is a difference between odds as discussed in this section and the payoff odds posted by casinos or bookmakers in sports gambling situations. Suppose we read in the newspaper, for example, that the Las Vegas bookmakers have established that “the odds that the Boston Celtics will win the NBA championship are 5 to 2.” What this means is that if you want to bet in favor of the Celtics, for every $2 that you bet, you can win $5 if the Celtics win. This ratio may be taken as some indication of the actual odds in favor of the Celtics winning, but several other factors affect payoff odds, and the connection between payoff odds and actual odds is tenuous at best.
