I'm sure none of you have ever wondered how people in the Elizabethan Era were notified about performances, but in case you have, they were signaled by flags. The theater would fly different flags above the building to signify that the theater was open. Color coding was used to advertise the type of play to be performed - a black flag meant a tragedy , white a comedy and red a history. A crest displaying Hercules bearing the globe on his shoulders together with the motto "Totus mundus agit histrionem" ( the whole world is a playhouse ) was displayed above the main entrance of the Globe Theater. Props and Scenery Scenery being carried on and off in full view would have been very disruptive of a play's action, and of course some members of the audience at the sides would have been able to see the back of the scenery once it was in position. If the script called for a particular environment – perhaps a cave or a tomb – a curtain at the back of the stage was pulled aside to reveal the 'empty space', where a set could be prepared in advance.You would walk over and pretend to be in a cave or tomb. Most people use props and scenery but in Shakespeare time people had to use their imagination and pretend to hold or use something. what type of props and scenery were used???? Large pieces of scenery were not used in the theatres of Shakespeare's time, where the stage projected right out into the middle of the audience. What were the costumes of the theater like in the Elizabethan era? The costumes of the theater did not reflect the time period of the play, but it was just the proper dress of the day. It was very inappropriate for people to dress out of their social class, in fact, it was even illegal! But there were certain exceptions, such as runners at jousts, tourneys, or such martial feats were allowed to wear the corresponding costumes. Meaning that actors were permitted to wear different clothing depicting the proper time period. Although, theaters rarely, if ever, had costumes. This is because they wrote and produced plays as quickly as possible to keep their audience entertained, so they didn't have time to prepare costumes. what were the costumes like ?  

Skills of actors and abilities Most actors just need to know their lines and know how to say their lines with a mood. In Elizabethan era actors skills and abilities had to be exact and perfect for the audience to feel the play.                                     Skills and Abilities:                                 -sword fighting                                 -able to fall convincingly                                 -voices of characters had to carry                                 -making gestures with arms and hands                                 -good memory                                             what other skills did actors need besides acting? Their skills would include sword fighting skills and they had to be able to fall convincingly. The voices of the actors had to carry well. To ensure that the plot was being communicated to the audience the actors had to 'over-act', making exaggerated gestures with their arms and hands. Their skills also had to include a good memory - there was a fast turnover of plays and this skill was a great asset for an actor although not an essential one...
