TRENDS & UPDATES IN VALUES EDUCATION INSTRUCTION Maricris B. Acido, Ph. D. Lecturer/Coordinator College of Education, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, DISP 2009

The 1993 UNESCO-APEID REPORT (Asia and the Pacific Program of Educational Innovation for Development Report)

Study of 11 countries (Bhutan, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Maldives, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam)

Looked into strategies that should be emphasized in the teaching-learning process

Identified trends in strategies used for Values Education instruction

The interesting aspect that emerged was the commonality in trends, issues, and problems

FINDINGS: Trends on Teaching Strategies The trend in terms of teaching strategies range from inculcation strategies, to values identification, to values clarification, moral dilemma, integrated and silent approach, structured learning activities, action learning, community projects, and others.

In the preparation of lessons, direct experiences should be considered over simulated ones/pictures whenever possible.

UPDATES ON INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACHES & TEACHING STRATEGIES

In-School Approaches: Experiential and Participatory Approach - maximizes involvement of pupils through planned activities prepared by the teacher (structured learning experiences)

Integrated Approach - integrating both the lesson content and the values relevant to the content

Modeling and the Silent Approach

Teaching Strategies

Values Clarification Strategies clarify positions, thoughts and feelings about certain situations by going through the valuing processes of choosing, pricing, and acting.

Moral Development Strategies premised on the theory that the values developed are based on the moral reasoning level or judgment of the person; enables the pupils to study the pros and cons of certain possible actions and their corresponding consequences before he/she makes a decision for final action

Values Inculcation the oldest and most commonly used strategy

RECENT TRENDS AND UPDATES digital libraries, picture book experience blogging, culture of explanation instead of a culture of the right answer, self-reflective activities, comprehensive approach, interdisciplinary/ multidisciplinary approach

DIVERSITY IN VALUES EDUCATION INSTRUCTION

to present some strategies that teachers can use to help children come to value the diversity that exists in the world around them

these strategies should emphasize: looking at the similarities and differences of people, and understanding stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination

APPROACHES 1.Contributions Approach - the mainstream curriculum remains intact and the teacher simply inserts content about ethnic heroes/heroines and specific cultural artifacts

2. Additive Approach - a book, unit or course is integrated into the core- curriculum without restructuring it

3. Transformation Approach - the core-curriculum’s basic goals, structure and perspectives are changed in order to help students view issues, concepts, and conflicts from multiple perspectives in an effort to understand the diversity and complexity of our society

4. Social Action Approach - encourages pupils to reflect on particular issue of concept under study, synthesize their knowledge and make some decisions about it. Learning is extended beyond the classroom to the world outside it, and pupils are encouraged to take some form of social action on a variety of community issues.

TEACHING STRATEGIES: Literature-based strategies (storytelling, plays, dramas, etc.) Cooperative and collaborative work Action research/social action work (volunteer work, community involvement)

NO DIFFERENCE Shel Silverstein Small as a peanut, Big as a giant, We are all the same size When we turn off the light.

Rich as a sultan, Poor as a mite, We’re all worth the same When we turn off the light.

Red, black or orange, Yellow or white, We all look the same When we turn off the light.

So maybe the way To make everything right Is for God to just reach out And turn off the light!

God Bless!
