Ice Breaker! Where are you logging in from this evening and what time is it there? I am in California and it is 5:00 pm PST. Some interesting facts about where I live: -I can be at the beach in 30 minutes! -I can be at the snow in 2 hours! -I can be in San Francisco in 1 ½ hours! -I can also be in Los Angeles in 5 hours! -I am pretty centrally located in the middle of the state.

KHE Seminar Environment This is the chat entry box! To open the history, click here

Review of Course Information I have no specific requirement for how to address me. As long as it isn’t derogatory I am okay with it! Most students call me: 1.Instructor Emeterio 2.Mrs. Emeterio 3.Jody Announcements -Please read all announcements! -I will post about 2 (at minimum) a week and highlight all important information for the unit.

Review of Course Information How to contact me: 1.Post general questions in the “Course Questions” DB 2. me! Or use the “ ” tab at the top of our course homepage 3.AIM: JodyEmeterio

Review of Course Information (last one!) Grades -Kaplan instructors have 5 days to grade after the due date. -I usually “batch grade” - I wait until after the assignment due date and grade all of your submissions together. -If you submitted your assignment early and are waiting…waiting…waiting for your grade, note that I *probably* won’t get to it until after the assignment due date.

Any Questions so far?

Scientific Inquiry & The Scientific Method What is the scientific method? Can anyone chime in some of the steps to it?

Scientific Inquiry & The Scientific Method Steps of the scientific method 1.Ask a question 2.Do background research 3.Construct a hypothesis 4.Test with an experiment 5.Analyze the results and draw a conclusion 6.Report your results

What is a testable question?

Scientific Inquiry & The Scientific Method What is a “Testable Question”? A testable question is a query that is posed in a way that can be investigated to produce data (evidence). -Testable questions are answered by collecting and analyzing evidence that is MEASURABLE. -Testable questions often begin with: How, What, If, Does Characteristics of questions that are not scientifically testable: -Their answers depend on personal preference. -Their answers depend on moral values. -They relate to the supernatural. -They relate to phenomena that cannot be measured. -They can begin with “Why”

Scientific Inquiry & The Scientific Method Some Examples: Not a testable question: “Is rock music better than hip-hop music?” Can anyone tell me why this isn’t a testable question? Testable questions: -Does rock music make more money than hip-hop music? -How do music sales vary by geographical distribution and by type of music? -How do music sales vary by age and gender of the buyer and by type of music?

Our Scenario…. Your getting ready to log in to your favorite KU course (SC300 of course!) and your computer won’t turn on. Now What?? What is our first step of the scientific method?

1. Ask a Question Why won’t my computer turn on? Maybe too general. Is my computer plugged in? Do I have all cables hooked up properly? Did I press the right button to turn it on? These questions are more specific and will be more helpful in finding your conclusion.

2. Do Background Research Look at all cables to see if properly plugged in. Check power source. Look to see if the right cables are plugged into the right spaces.

3. Construct a Hypothesis I hypothesize my computer will not turn on because my power cord was not properly installed. Based on my research I found the cord to be loose and not connected properly. I hypothesize my computer will not turn on due to a power failure. Based on my research I found that my power has been shut off.

4. Test With an Experiment I will test my hypothesis of the power cord not properly installed by unplugging it completely and then reattaching it correctly. I will test my hypothesis of the power being out by going to my breaker box and resetting the breaker.

5. Analyze Results/Draw Conclusion Once the power cord was reinstalled the computer (did or did not) work. If it did, then our hypothesis was found true and there is no further investigation needed. If it was found false, then we would need to reconstruct a new hypothesis. Once the breaker was reset my power came back on and my computer also turned on. If this is correct, there is no further investigation needed. If it was found false, then we would need to reconstruct a new hypothesis.

6. Report Your Results Write a scientific report explaining your method of testing and the results that you found. You also indicate whether or not your hypothesis was found true or false.

Questions before we end?

Thank you all for attending! Have a wonderful evening!
