Engagement High Commitment High Attention The work has inherent meaning to the student. Students persist in the face of difficulty and retain knowledge.

Strategic Compliance Low Commitment High Attention Has little or no inherent meaning but is associated with things that the student values. College, Jobs, scholarships Superficial understanding of information and do not retain the information.

Ritual Compliance Low Commitment Low Attention See little or no inherent meaning in the work, but to avoid conflict, the student will “get it over”. Do not retain information

Retreatism No Commitment No Attention Withdrawn from the task or work, but not disruptive in class. Students don’t replace work with other activities. Do not participate and learns nothing from the task.

Rebellion No Commitment No Attention Refusal to do the work assigned and disruptive. Act out and encourage others to join in the rebellion.
