Arizona’s Treasure: Copper! By Mr. Korn

Copper is a kind of metal that we can dig out of the ground. People started digging copper, gold, and silver out of the ground in Arizona many years ago. This is what copper looks like when it comes out of the ground.

Native Americans, like the Navajo, were the first people to dig copper out of the ground in Arizona. They used it to make jewelry and tools.

Later people started to build copper mines in Arizona. A copper mine is a place where people use big machines to dig copper out of the ground.

Arizona is famous for having so much copper in the ground. Miners in Arizona send copper from our state all over the country. Today copper is used to make many, many things:

So next time you see a penny, remember that it might have come from the ground right here in Arizona. The ground right underneath you!
