Social 10 Pre AP Chapter 9 Effects of Cultural Contact

Housekeeping I am pleased with how things are going. Your essay is due on Monday. We are going to the lab tomorrow to work on it. You have a quiz on Friday, it will be fill in the blanks and short answer. NOT open book.

Housekeeping We will finish the film now. Then we will talk about the format of the essay. Finally, we will talk about the Oka Crisis.

How to write an essay? Make sure you know your topic. How will you address the question. Prepare your THESIS. Pick three arguments to support your position. Find material to back your information up. (text book, teacher’s notes, Internet*) *only certain websites are useful, make sure to see me with any websites, so that I may approve them.

Now, we are ready to start writing. (well, Almost) Your essay should have 5 paragraphs. – Introduction / Theses – 3 Body Paragraphs – Conclusion Your essay should be not be in 1st Person. – Eg. I think this was wrong.

Body 1, 2, and 3 Make sure these are in the same order as stated in your theses. Topic Sentence – This is like a mini theses. But, it just talks about this paragraph. Five points to back it up, using reference. Make sure you are helping your argument, and don’t be afraid to go back and alter your thesis. But, it must coincide with your thesis.

Introduction A) Introduce the issue. Opening Statement B) Effects of Cultural Contact on aboriginals. C) Theses, These are the three points that arguments that back up my position, Point A, Point B, Point C.

Conclusion Restate your thesis. Make reference to your 3 arguments.

What do you see in this picture “on a cue card write it out, I’ll give you a few minutes.”

Historical Impacts and Civil Striff In this photo, who it the bad guy? Tell me the story, what is happening? This is a very famous photo that embodies that tension of the Oka Crisis.

Hmmm? What might both of these soilders been thinking?

About Oka March Armed members of the Mohawk first nations (Kanestake) barricaded a road near the town of Oka. They protested the building of a Golf Course on what was considered sacred land to the First nations. The government sent in a SWAT team and launched tear gas, in the fighting one member of the police was killed.

Continued Soon, first nations across Canada joined the fight. In Cold Lake (that’s right Alberta) first nations burnt bridges to a Military Base. After 26 days the group agreed on a settlement. 2 first nations were killed.

Outcomes The golf course was stopped. Land (partial) given to the Mohawks. The international community questioned the actions of the Quebec Government. Started the Royal Commission. Among other things.

Let’s watch some news clips ics/99/

How About Now. Take that cue card and, on the other side, explain if your perspective or understanding has changed?
