Revision of the CH4 emission inventory for enteric fermentation in the Czech Republic P. Fott (CHMI), P. Hons (Agrobio) and Z. Mudrik (Agricult. University) Prague, Czech Republic

Present state of inventory (1) Key sources from agriculture in the Czechia (Tier 1) Direct emissions of N2O from agriculture soils = 1. 9 % Indirect emissions of N2O from agriculture = 1. 3 % Enteric fermentation – CH4 (mostly from cattle) = 1. 2 % Existing approach for enteric fermentation – an attempt to follow IPCC Tier 2 method based on older studies of Czech experts from agricultural research institutes EF = (365 / 55.65) * daily calorific intake (MJ/day) * Y Y …. conversion (default value = 0.06 )

Present state of inventory (2) In older Czech studies for cattle: Y = 0.08 (?) Calculation of EF was based on direct estimate of food intake Recent reviews undertaken by UNFCCC have revealed that these EFs are considerably lower than for other European countries: Requirement of comparability is not fulfilled

Suggested approach for recalculations IPCC Good Practice Guidance (Tier 2): 1) Choose suitable sub-categories of cattle 2) Collect performance data for each sub-category 3) Calculate feed intake from animal performance data Weight, Weight gain, Mature weight Feeding situation (stall, pasture, grazing large areas) Milk (daily production, % of fat in milk) Pregnancy (% of females that give birth in year) Feed digestibility (% energy in feed non extracted)

Testing of calculating procedures Harmony of Tier 1 and Tier 2 of the IPCC Methodology Tier 1 default values can be obtained from Tier 2 calculation for typical sub-continental animal performance

Example: Dairy Cows (data for 2001)

EFs for Cows (data for 2001)

Example: growing males

Subcategories for calculation

Subcategories in Czech statistics

Resulting values of EFs for 2001

Conclusions Calculation procedures are still under development: only preliminary (non-official data) have been presented Application of QA/QC mechanisms is necessary How recalculate emissions estimates: –Collect statistical data for all subcategories since 1990 –Collect all agro-technical (performance) data needed for Tier 2 calculations according to IPCC Good Practice G. –For enteric fermentation of other animals (sheep etc) use Tier 1 approach using IPCC default EFs –Recalculate all data series since 1990 and do corrections in reporting all forms (CRF) submitted to UNFCC and EEA
