Before Modern Israel 1880s Zionist movement begins among Jews. Zion=A place or religious community sacredly devoted to God. Jews begin to move to Palestine in larger numbers during the 1930s This is upsetting to local Arab peoples World War II creates thousands of Jewish refugees

Early Israel 1948—Israel is created as a Jewish state and is recognized by the United Nations. As Jews move in, Palestinians are forced out (thousands of Palestinian refugees.) Economic success comes quickly—Jews work together to farm, manufacture & create a military.

Arabs Attack Israel shocks the world by repelling an attack by Egypt and winning the war in six days (Six Day War)

Palestine Liberation Organization Palestine wants self rule. Yassir Arafat leads the PLO. Signed Wye Agreement as a step toward peace. Some see him as a hero, others as a terrorist.
