History Origami is paper folding. (Ori=folding, Kami=paper) It is known to be Japanese but it is possible that it existed in China, Germany, Italy and Spain as well. Origami= 17 th century- present (became popular outside of Japan in 20 th century) In Heian period ( ), it took significant role. Origami butterflies= used in Shinto Wedding = representing bride and groom.

Types of Origami  Action Origami -Origami does not cover still-life, it can also be moving objects. -It requires kinetic energy of person’s hand.  Modular Origami -Putting individual and same pieces together to form a model  Pureland Origami -Origami with restriction that only 1 fold can be done -Developed by John Smith in the 1970s  Kirigami -Japanese term for paper cutting (occurred in 1960s) -Since most origami designers do not consider origami with cuts to be origami, instead they call it kirigami.

Tool *A main tool to make origami is hands. Some origami do require other tools such as glue, tape, scissor, pincer and etc. Glue & Tape= stick more than 2 pieces of paper Scissor= cut the paper into different shape Pincer= replacement of hands when you are folding something very small *If scissor is used to cut, it is called Kirigami. (Kiri= cutting, Kami= paper)

Usefulness  Children= Origami teaches the children to follow the steps.  Students= Origami helps the students with identifying the angle mathematically.  Adults= Origami can be very good hobby and stop people from getting depression.  Seniors= Origami helps the seniors to keep their fingers moving.
