Welcome to Team Captain Training!!

We need to find a cure! Except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women. Breast cancer is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among women. Without a cure, a woman has a 12%, or 1 in 8, lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. During 2009, it is estimated that: More than 192,370 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 40,170 women will die from breast cancer. More than 1,910 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 440 will die from breast cancer.

We need to find a cure! In the US, when breast cancer is found early (when it is confined to the breast) the 5-year survival rate is about 98%. The greatest risk factors for getting breast cancer are simply being female and getting older. Only 5 -10% of breast cancers are traced to heredity. The majority of women with breast cancer have no known family history or other known risk factors.

We can make a difference In the last 25 years across the US, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has raised and invested approximately $1 billion to fund research, screening, treatment, and education related to breast cancer. Over the next decade, Komen for the Cure plans to raise and fund an additional $1 billion. Komen gives more money to help fund screening, treatment, and research related to breast cancer than any other organization in the world other than the U.S. government. Most major discoveries related to breast cancer have received funding from Komen, including the discover of the BRCA genes and the discovery of Tamoxifen.

We help women and men in Houston 75% of the net proceeds raised through the Komen Houston Affiliate stays in Houston to help uninsured and underserved women and men in the community. To date, the Komen Houston Affiliate has given more than $19 million locally for education, screening, and treatment 25% of the money raised goes to Komen National to fund cutting-edge research and education grants. Many of these dollars come back to Houston through national grants for our service area. To date, the Komen Houston Affiliate has contributed over $6 million for research.
