Mapping Essential Question: How do you find the absolute location of a place?

1. scale - ratio of a distance on the map to the corresponding distance on the ground

2. Title- tells what the map is about

3. Compass -direction arrow that points north on the map -points the four directions as well

4. Legend - explain the various colors and symbols used on the map

5. Grid  Where these two lines (latitude and longitude) cross is the absolute location on the map. - lines used to show the location of places

B. Latitude and Longitude - are imaginary lines on a map - help you to pinpoint an exact location on a map

1. Latitude - 0 degrees latitude is called the EQUATOR. - tells you how far NORTH or SOUTH of the equator you are

2. Longitude - 0 degrees longitude is called the PRIME MERIDIAN. - tells you how far EAST or WEST of the prime meridian you are.

 When given a location, LATITUDE is always listed FIRST and LONGITUDE is listed SECOND. Ex ° N, ° W= Los Angeles ° N, ° W= Moreno Valley ° N, ° W = Perris
