The Pantanal! Come on a journey!!!

j  The Pantanal in South America is the world’s largest wetland measuring 40,000,000 acres. It is situated in three countries, Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. The name "Pantanal" comes from the Portuguese word pântano, meaning wetland, bog, swamp or marsh. Eighty percent of the Pantanal is submerged during the rainy season. It contains a diverse collection of plants and animals, including aquatic plants.

j  The wetlands of Pantanal provide home to 1000 bird species, 400 fish species, 300 mammalian species, 480 reptile species and over 9000 different subspecies of invertebrates. The Pantanal ecosystem is home to 3500 known plant species. The vegetation of the Pantanal is often referred to as the "Pantanal complex" and is a mixture of plant communities. The Pantanal is home to one of the largest and healthiest Jaguar populations on Earth. Hyacinth Macaw 

j  Though most Pantanal land is privately owned, not many people actually live in the Pantanal. The people of the Pantanal are known as 'Pantaneiros'. The main economic activity is cattle-ranching. Pantanal cowboys (peões) have their own typical food, clothing and equipment. They blow their air horn as an instrument or to signal each other.  Though most Pantanal land is privately owned, not many people actually live in the Pantanal. j  The Pantanal Conservation Complex consists of four protected areas with a total area of 187,818 hectares located in western central Brazil at the south-west corner of the State of Mato Grosso. The site represents 1.3% of Brazil's Pantanal region. The area preserves habitats of the Pantanal that contain several threatened species. The area is a refuge for animals as it is the only area of the Pantanal that remains partially wet during the dry season.  The Pantanal Conservation Complex consists of four protected areas with a total area of 187,818 hectares located in western central Brazil at the south-west corner of the State of Mato Grosso.
