Unit 4 – Outcome 2

 IMPORTANT As usual, explaining how these organisations can improve health and human development (using an example) is a much more important skill than merely listing what they do.

 The aims and objectives # of the Australian Government’s AusAID and the role it plays in programs to improve global health and sustainable human development; # Seeking Clarification

 Describe the role of AusAid* in global health and sustainable human development. * international and Australian government and non-government agencies and organisations.

 Australian Agency for International Development  Manages Australia’s international Aid program.  Australian Government Organisation  Established in 1974  Aims to reduce poverty in developing countries by ?

AusAid Aims to:  Improve economic management and strengthen democracy  Maximise trade and technology  Provide vital services like education, health care water, sanitation  Strengthen security by preventing conflict and managing borders  Promote sustainable approaches to environmental management.

 To assist developing countries reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development, in line with Australia's national interest.  Australia's development assistance focus on poverty is guided by the Millennium Development Goals, the internationally agreed targets for poverty reduction.

 Saving lives  Promoting opportunities for all  Sustainable economic development  Effective governance  Humanitarian and disaster response

 Help People Overcome Poverty This also serves Australia’s national interests by promoting stability and prosperity both in our region and beyond. We focus our effort in areas where Australia can make a difference and where our resources can most effectively and efficiently be deployed.

 Our 1970 promise to the UN: “Each economically advanced country will progressively increase its official development assistance to the developing countries and will exert its best efforts to reach a minimum net amount of 0.7 per cent of its gross national product at market prices by the middle of the decade.”

 At 0.33% of GNI, Australia is ranked 16th in 2009 among 23 OECD nations. Below Australia are New Zealand, Portugal, United States, Greece, Japan, Italy and South Korea. Portugal and Greece are relying on international support to stave off national bankruptcy, and the United States is dealing with massive financial problems.
