Manufacturing  St. Petersburg is a shipbuilding center  Most manufacturing centers are in western Russia  Factories focus on heavy industry  Some factories switched to light industry  Factories in St. Petersburg make light machinery, textiles, and scientific and medical equipment

Russia’s resources  Bauxite  Gold, Coal  Copper  Fishing  Iron, Lead  Natural gas  Nickel  Petroleum  Tin, Zinc Gold is one of Russia top sources

Russia’s industries  Industrial production growth rate 13.1%  Metals are used to make advanced air crafts, ships, missiles  Defensive technology include radars, and advanced electronics components  Medical and scientific industry include textiles, handicrafts, foodstuffs  Road and rail transportation include communication equipment, tractors and construction equipment

The Volga and Urals Region Volga:  Carries almost one-half of Russia’s river traffic  It provides water for irrigation and for hydroelectric power  The home of Russia’s most productive farmlands Urals:  Miners mine bauxite for aluminum, copper, gold, lead and nickel  Many energy resources such as coal, oil, and natural gas
