Low Energy Building Design Crit 2 – Group G Mandy Wardrop | Nichola Murray | Christopher Weir | Callum Maloney | Jonathan Donnard | Martin Choné

Crit 2 In today’s presentation we will cover:  Assignment of tasks  Project management  Design geometry  Cooling system  Lighting and ventilation  Website progress

Assignment of Tasks Project management Renewable energy supplies Mandy Geometry and materials Nichola Geometry and materials Chris Cooling system Demand reduction Callum Cooling system Renewable energy supplies Jonathan Lighting and ventilation Martin

Project Management Week 6-8 Consider and create sustainable design for technical sub-systems Undertake performance and cost appraisals for proposed design Continue to update website with design progress Prepare for Week 9 crit Week 9-10 Finalise complete design of data centre, including demand reduction and renewable energy systems Week Finish web site design Prepare for final crit

Design Initial ideas

Design Geometry

Cooling system  Either water or oil based cooling system  Cools 70% of the heat generated by the IT equipment  Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) reduced by 33%  Increased energy efficiency over other systems  Less expensive compared to other systems

Cooling system  Pros for water:  Local supply – cheap source  Low temperature of water year round  Could also be used as water supply for toilets/kitchens  Cons for water:  May need some treatment – issues with sea water  Accelerate corrosion of metal parts in cooling system  Needs to be deionized for electronic systems

Cooling system  Pros for oil:  It is an electrical insulator so can be in direct contact with electrical components  Liquid systems reduce sound pollution – quieter systems  No rust prevention methods required  Cons for oil:  Initial capital cost for buying the oil  Oil can be flammable  Specific heat is about half the value of water so a given volume of oil may absorb less heat than the same volume of water

Cooling system  Volume of liquid required  Temperature of liquid  Flow rate of liquid  Specific heat of liquid  Total amount of energy required to supply cooling system Factors we have to consider :

Cooling system Water cooling system

Cooling system Water cooling system

Cooling system Oil cooling system

Lighting  Server rooms:  Bi-level lightning  Illuminance :  lux (area in front of the racks)  150 lux (Security)  Occupancy sensors/ sectoring of the room  Use of LEDs)  Office Spaces  Distinct lighting levels  Maximize Daylight (Windows/Roof windows)  Utilisation of DIALux

Lighting  Server rooms:  72 x 70W rectangular LED luminaires  24 x 12W down lights

Ventilation  Server rooms  Oil or water cooling system will cool the air  Necessity of mechanical Ventilation (No opening)  Required air change: 2-10 (Simplified as Warehouses)  Office Spaces  Maximize natural ventilation  Oriented perpendicular to summers wind  Ridge vents  Air change rate determined by the use of the room  Required air change: 2-6

Website

Next steps Our plan for the next 3 weeks is to:  Consider and create sustainable design for technical sub-systems  Undertake performance and cost appraisals for proposed design  Continue to update website with design progress  Prepare for Week 9 crit
