D R I V I N G F O R R E S U L T S : S T R E N G T H E N I N G T H E S C I E N C E B A S I S A N D C A T A L Y T I C R O L E O F U N E P Options proposed for the GEO-5 report  A “classic” IEA report in the style of GEOs-1 to 4.  An expert assessment report (a la HDR/WRR).  A coherent set of integrated & thematic assessments relating to the six priority areas of UNEP.  A purely indicator-based report (like MDG report).  A so-called “UNEP-live” approach for continual, on-line reporting (thematically based). Options 1-5 discussed by UNEP’s GC-25:

D R I V I N G F O R R E S U L T S : S T R E N G T H E N I N G T H E S C I E N C E B A S I S A N D C A T A L Y T I C R O L E O F U N E P Decision: Option 3/transition to Option 5  Flexible/parallel/more rapid (6-18 mo.) assessments.  Able to focus on specific issues (e.g., “food crisis”) under the six priority areas of UNEP’s PoW.  Will include a global report on interlinkages between the six priority areas (“chapeau” or umbrella).  The latter will still be produced every five years.  This approach combines global/macro analysis of environmental state and trends, with a more flexible, rapid and targeted set of reports. D R I V I N G F O R R E S U L T S : S T R E N G T H E N I N G T H E S C I E N C E B A S I S A N D C A T A L Y T I C R O L E O F U N E P The next global IEA generation ~ GEO-5  GEO-5 will access all of UNEP’s sub-programmes and their resources; a bold new approach.  GEO-5 will cover the six thematic programme areas, using expert scientific input from the existing collaborating centres network and individual scientists, to provide an up-to-date picture on the state and trends of the global environment.  GEO-5 will build on existing data & indicators work and applications such as the GEO Data Portal, ex- panding these into a broad “Platform” for all of UNEP to use in a wide variety of assessment types.
