CCA Forum Summer Meeting1 27 July CCA Common Component Architecture CCA at SC06 David E. Bernholdt ORNL
CCA Forum Summer Meeting227 July 2006 CCA Common Component Architecture It’s a Brave New World Out There! No CCA tutorial Completely new ORNL booth Should we submit some posters?
CCA Forum Summer Meeting327 July 2006 CCA Common Component Architecture No CCA Tutorial The Tutorial Committee did not accept our tutorial proposal –This is not a big surprise – it is unusual for SC to have the same topic more than three years in a row –Last year was CCA’s fourth tutorial in a row ( ) New, CCA-relevant tutorials have been accepted –Eclipse Parallel Tools Platform (Wilson & Rasmussen, LANL) –Kepler Workflow Environment (SDM people) –Perhaps others I haven’t heard about –Consider being a tutee rather than a tutor!
CCA Forum Summer Meeting427 July 2006 CCA Common Component Architecture A Lesson for Next Time This year’s reviews were different from past years The one consistent negative comment had to do with our (ab)use of the “presenters” –There are meant to be at most four for a full-day tutorial –We have traditionally listed all (~13) Tutorial Working Group members in order to provide recognition and sorted out the actual presenters later –Until now, this has not been a problem for anyone For next year’s proposal, we need to reconsider this approach –They really want to know the actual and specific names of the presenters at the time the proposal is submitted (March)
CCA Forum Summer Meeting527 July 2006 CCA Common Component Architecture I Promise the Tutorial WG won’t be Bored! Without the SC tutorial crunch, we have a chance to take a more considered approach to revising the tutorial After ACTS, we will plan and implement extensive revisions to the tutorial
CCA Forum Summer Meeting627 July 2006 CCA Common Component Architecture CCA Outreach at SC Traditionally, we’ve relied on the CCA tutorial and the ORNL booth for our major visibility –And the many other booths that also have CCA content This year, we don’t have a tutorial and ORNL’s got a completely different booth We need a new outreach strategy!
CCA Forum Summer Meeting727 July 2006 CCA Common Component Architecture ORNL’s New Look 30’x50’ footprint Interior office Conference room Large “theater” display Tiled plasma display 4-5 demo kiosks 5 light boxes
CCA Forum Summer Meeting827 July 2006 CCA Common Component Architecture Demo Kiosks Four kiosks Will have permanent computer and display Plan to be able to display any content from any kiosk (central server) Expect only “standard” presentation tools to be supported Probably Windows, possibly Mac, unlikely Linux Not clear if there is room to setup laptop for “walk-up” demo I am pushing this issue
CCA Forum Summer Meeting927 July 2006 CCA Common Component Architecture The Brave New World More “theater” oriented –Two large displays (single projector, tiled plasma) –Usage by reservation only (almost certain) No posters –No CCA content to catch the eye of passers by (may be able to partly mitigate) –No “CCA corner” to make easy to identify CCA- knowledgeable people Handouts –Literature racks (likely) Digital content on kiosks –No dedicated kiosk (almost certain) –Not sure how kiosks will operate Unattended operation? or only in company of booth staff? What will be displayed when no one is “using” the kiosk? Reception desk –Not sure who is expected to staff –Will they know CCAers to direct visitors to them?
CCA Forum Summer Meeting1027 July 2006 CCA Common Component Architecture What’s Missing (Compared to Past Years)? Extensive poster content allowed passers-by to learn something without interacting with booth staff –Currently handout appear the only way to do this –Trying to think of other approaches Posters gave us an easily-identified location for people to inquire about CCA –New booth has no such clues –Receptionist and other booth staff may not be able to recognize non-ORNL CCAers to direct others to them –Maybe we need a CCA tattoo this year? Dedicated posters & demo space gave us a place to hang out –May still have hang-out space, but not so public (office, conference room, balcony)
CCA Forum Summer Meeting1127 July 2006 CCA Common Component Architecture What Should We Do? Theater presentations –Needs to be visually interesting –Grab as many slots as we can (???) PPT loop(s) –Exactly what we prepare depends on mode of operation –May be better to have something a hierarchy of separate short presentations that’s how the PPT loop always starts anyway Demos (???) –Think about capturing demos as “movies” or PPT loops? Handouts –So far, this is the only thing targeting casual passers-by –Topics and coverage probably need to be better coordinated than in the past
CCA Forum Summer Meeting1227 July 2006 CCA Common Component Architecture What Else? More ideas for “drive-by” content? How to “grab” people’s attention? How to identify CCAers in the booth? How/where to give demos? Should we submit poster(s) to SC06? –Deadline is Monday 31 July –What topic(s)? Other ways of gaining visibility on & off show floor?
