Plastic Pollution In Our Ocean Ocean Elements Sdn Bhd ( W)

1: Plastic Pollution Living with plastics What we throw away… Plastic pollution on our beach What can we do? 2: Project AWARE

Living with Plastics Every year, more than 200 Million tonnes of plastics are produced all over the world. 200 Million tonnes = 200,000,000,000 kilograms!

Living with Plastics Every week, 10 Billion plastic bags are used around the world 10 Billion = 10,000,000,000 plastic bags!

What We Throw Away Sadly, every year 6 Million tonnes of rubbish and thrash that we throw away end up in our Oceans. 90% of the rubbish are PLASTICS! 6 Million tonnes = 6,000,000,000 kilograms

What We Throw Away Plastics that we throw away go into the drain, then into streams, rivers and finally, the oceans.

What We Throw Away Plastics take MORE THAN 450 YEARS to decompose (i.e. to break down)

What We Throw Away Today it is estimated that 100 Million tonnes of plastics are FLOATING in our Oceans.

What We Throw Away These floating plastics then come together in areas called the “Plastic Soup”

What We Throw Away In the ocean, plastic materials break into smaller pieces that float in the sea water like “soup".

What We Throw Away These tiny plastics are then eaten by fish like this Rainbow runner and other marine animals

What We Throw Away Some poor animals also get tangled up with these plastic materials as they swim in the sea.

Plastic Pollution on Our Beach A beach in Malaysia polluted by plastics! Not so beautiful now isn’t it?

Plastic Pollution on Our Beach A remote area in North America polluted by plastics from the sea.

Plastic Pollution on Our Beach A beach on a remote island about 1,500km from Hawaii. Plastic arrives here!

What Can We Do? Try not to use plastic bag so much!

What Can We Do? Avoid using plastic food containers and utensils (fork, spoon, straw etc.)

What Can We Do? Use water bottles that we can re-fill and re-use!

What Can We Do? Pick up thrash and rubbish from our beaches!

What Can We Do? Take part in beach clean- up activities!

What Can We Do? Organize a beach clean- up event with your friends and family!

What Can We Do? If you’re a scuba diver, why not take part in an underwater clean-up?

What Can We Do? Tell your family and friends about this issue of plastic pollution!

Project AWARE

Marine Debris Statistics on Marine Debris activities by Project AWARE in 2012 Year ,000 kg of thrash 5,600 participants 50 countries

Marine Debris Dungun kg of thrash 3,000 plastic bottles 450 participants Statistics from our Beach Clean-up event in Dungun, Terengganu (2012)

Every year, more than 38 Million sharks are killed to get their fins Malaysia is the 10 th LARGEST exporter of shark fins in the world! Shark Conservation
