Chapter 6

 Let’s think of the United States and Canada as one big chunk of ground.  If that is the case, what lies to the north? What lies to the south? What lies to the east? What lies to the west? Arctic Ocean Gulf of Mexico Pacific Ocean Atlantic Ocean

 Rocky Mountains are the largest mountain system in North America  Second largest are the Appalachian Mountains which become the Laurentian Highlands in Canada  In between are the Great Plains in America and Interior Plains of Canada Rocky Mountains Appalachian Mtns. Lauentian Highlands Interior Plains Great Plains

 Gulf-Atlantic Coastal Plain – narrow in the NE and more broad SW with flat very fertile land that many settlers historically took advantage of  West of the Rockies is the Great Basin where the Great Salt Lake and Death Valley are located Gulf-Atlantic Coastal Plain

 West of the Great Basin lie the Coast Ranges, Sierra Nevada Mountains, & the Cascades  The Cascades have been formed by volcanoes  Glaciers fill the valleys in between these ranges of North America Coast Mts. Cascade Range Sierra Nevada

 Mount Logan, which is Canada’s highest peak, is located in the Yukon Territory  The Canadian Shield, a huge area of ancient rock, covers ½ of Canada and not many people live there  The Saint Lawrence Lowlands are the smallest land region, but most of Canada’s people live there because of manufacturing and agriculture St. Lawrence Lowlands

 Great Lakes (home to 1/5 of all fresh water on Earth!  Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario were formed millions of years ago by glaciers Superior Michigan Huron Erie Ontario

 The largest river in the United States is the Mississippi River  The Ohio and the Missouri are tributaries  The Mississippi has had massive floods, but provides great transportation too  The Fraser, Columbia, & Colorado flow west from the Rockies  The Platte and Missouri flow east from the Rockies  The Rockies form a Continental Divide ap_1.jpg

 The Mackenzie is Canada’s longest and an important transportation route  Years ago supplies to local trading posts & today carries energy & mineral resources like oil and natural gas  The St. Lawrence River is one of North America’s most important transportation routes  Millions of tons of cargo travel through each year
