Presentation transcript:

ATTAINABLE ACHIEVABLE SMART Goals Template Step Word Explanation Goals S SPECIFIC Exactly what is it you want to achieve in your business or personal life? Good goal statements explain: what, why, who, where and when. If your goal statement is vague, you will find it hard to achieve because it will be hard to define success Not specific: Stay out of trouble, get straight A’s Specific: Get to class on-time, turn in all of my work. M MEASURABLE You must be able to track progress and measure the result of your goal. Good goal statements answer the question: how much or how many. How will I know when I achieve my goal? Not Measurable: I want to make a lot of free throws. Measurable: I want to make at least 9 of 10 free throws in the next game A ATTAINABLE ACHIEVABLE Goals should be achievable; they should stretch you slightly so you feel challenged, but defined well enough so that you can achieve them. You must possess the appropriate knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to achieve the goal. Nope: I will loose weight. Yep: I will lose 5kg by June 1st by eliminating sugar from my diet. R REALISTIC The goal should be stretching, but realistic and relevant to you and your company. Ensure the actions you need to take to achieve your goal are things you can do and control. Is this goal achievable? Unrealistic: I want to make 100 free throws in every game  Realistic: I want to make 8 of 10 shots that I take T TIMELY Goals must have a deadline. A good goal statement will answer the question: When will I achieve my goal? Without deadlines, it’s easy to put goals off and leave them to die. As well as a deadline, it’s a good idea to set some short-term milestones along the way to help you measure progress? Not Timely: I want to learn to play the guitar Timely: By October 1, I want to be able to play A chords without looking at my hands

ATTAINABLE ACHIEVABLE SMART Goals Template Step Word Explanation Goals S SPECIFIC What: What do I want to accomplish? Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal. Who: Who is involved? Where: Identify a location Which: Identify requirements and constraints. M MEASURABLE How much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished?  Note: Indicators should be quantifiable A ATTAINABLE ACHIEVABLE How can the goal be accomplished? How realistic is the goal based on other constraints? R REALISTIC Does this seem worthwhile? Is this the right time? Does this match our other efforts/needs? Are you the right person? Is it applicable in the current socio- economic environment? T TIMELY What can I do six months from now? What can I do six weeks from now? What can I do today?

Define the Options Idea: Typical Questions: Help your team member brainstorm (or other techniques) Let Coachee offer her options first Let Coachee do most of the talking Then, Offer your own suggestions Important: Guide Coachee in right direction Do not make decisions for her Typical Questions: What else could you do? What if this or that constraint is removed? Would that change things? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option? What factors or considerations will you use to weigh the options? What do you need to stop doing in order to achieve this goal? What obstacles stand in your way?

Coaching Learnings Coachee should “trust” in coach  key factor SMART template can be difficult to apply in real scenarios  too many questions Balance questions Too many and too challenging might be discouraging Few questions and easy ones might be not useful for Coachee Be flexible  good way to discover things you didn’t plan Summaries are important, specially in long sessions Ask for feedback  only way to know what you should improve Practice a lot
