Unit Rates SWBAT use unit rates to solve problems and make comparisons.

Warm Up 1.Which is shorthand to write 5 x 5 x 5 x 5? A)5 x x 5B) 5 4 C) 5 3 D) Both coordinates of a point in the coordinate plane are negative. In which quadrant is this point located? 3. A baker has 27 wheat bagels and 36 plain bagels that will be divided into boxes. Each box must have the same number of wheat bagels and the same number of plain bagels. What is the greatest number of boxes the baked can make using all the bagels?

Unit Rate A unit rate is a rate in which the second quantity is one unit. When the first quantity in a unit rate is an amount of money, the unit rate is sometimes called a unit price or unit cost. Ex: 60 miles per hour (this is per 1 hour) Ex: $1.99 per pound (per 1 pound)

Example Maria pays $60 for 5 music lessons. What is the cost per lesson? Step 1: Use the info to write a rate.  $60/5 lessons Step 2: Divide both quantities in the rate by the same number so that the second quantity is 1.  $60/5 lessons = $12/1 lesson

Example The cost of 3 candles is $ What is the unit price? $19.50/3 candles. The unit price is ___________ per candle.

Example A bakery charges $7 for ½ dozen muffins. What is the price per dozen? $7/ ½ dozen  The muffins cost ____________ per dozen.

You Try 1.Michael walks 30 meters in 20 seconds. How many meters does Michael walk per second? 2.There are 156 players on 13 teams. How many players are on each team? 3.A package of 36 photographs costs $18. What is the cost per photo? 4.What do all of the unit rates have in common with the original ratio?

Using Unit Rate to Solve Problems In a youth soccer league, each team will have 18 players and 3 coaches. This year, 162 players signed up to play. How many coaches are needed? First we need to calculate the amount of players per coach. 18 players/3 coaches = _____players/ 1 coach We could also make equivalent ratios.

Guided Practice 1.Tim can mow 4 lawns in 6 hours. How many lawns can he mow in 15 hours? (hint: first calculate the unit rate) 2.On Tuesday, Katie earned $9 for 2 hours of babysitting. On Saturday, she babysat for the same family and earned $ How many hours did she babysit on Saturday?
