Compares two things of the same units 6 boys 24 girls Still the same unit – people -
Compares two things with different units of measurement 200 miles 5 hours 2097 yards 348 carries
Just like rates, except evaluated so the denominator is one. You divide here. This is really like finding the “average.” 2097 yards 348 carries 6.03 yards 1 carry =
- Pick any theme/topic of your choosing. - Find real data/stats. - Compare these ratios, rates, unit rates, and analyze what they mean in real life.
- 1 example of a RATIO – on 1 slide - 6 examples of RATES (denominator cannot be 1) - Simplify those rates to UNIT RATES on a different slide - Bar or Column Graph of UNIT RATES - Make an X Y Scatter Plot showing all 6 - Visual aides!!!- Labels!!!- Colors!!! - Last slide should analyze what the results mean to you in real life.
Ratios: The gas in a leaf blower needs to be mixed with oil. But, you need to mix the right amount or it will break. An example is 50:1 This means that for every ounce of oil, you need 50 ounces of gasoline. Both units are measurements of volume, making this a ratio.
Lets compare the power (HP) and weight (lbs) of various motorcycles. Rates:
63 HP 525 lbs 1990 Suzuki VX 800 This is my old bike
96 HP 682 lbs 2007 Harley-Davidson Softail NightTrain My next bike
91 HP 434 lbs 1999 Buell Cyclone My new bike.
105 HP 403 lbs 2013 Triumph Speed Triple Would love this one too
40 HP 540 lbs 1941 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead Someday!
190 HP 440 lbs 2013 KTM Superduke 1290 Sounds fun

Type of Bike Power to Weight HP per lb Horsepower per Pound
So what does all this mean??? -Well, with the exception of the 71 year-old, WWII-era Harley, my old Suzuki has the lowest horsepower per pound rate in the study. - Also, it looks like the Buell is a good choice since it is an improvement over what I have, and is much cheaper than the newer Harley and the Triumph. -The KTM’s numbers make it seem pretty dangerous! It is almost the same weight as the Buell, but has about 100 more horsepower. Some cars don’t have that much. = too slow! = Crazy, but fun!
