Columbian Exchange– Pg. 138

Encomienda System Used in the Spanish controlled colonies: Spanish settlers would provide protection, care, and Catholic conversion to the natives. In return, the natives would work on the Spanish settlers lands…  However, it didn’t work out so nicely  Spanish plantation owners made the natives into slaves and most of them died from disease and harsh working conditions.

Slavery Native Americans were first used as slave labor. European diseases killed off most of the natives. This created a labor shortage. Africans were brought in to take the place of the Native Americans.

Slavery Slavery was based upon race. Native Americans and Africans were considered inferior and only good for manual labor.

Plantation System Plantations were created to grow as many crops as possible. Required huge areas of land cleared of natural forests. Displaced natives and wildlife.

Effects of Plantation System Destroyed Native American economic system. Most Native Americans (especially in the Caribbean) became slaves. Those who didn’t had to move off their lands. Damaged the environment through soil erosion and waste.

The Triangle Trade

Triangle Trade The flow of goods to and from Europe became known as the “Triangle Trade”. Europeans traded finished goods (pots, pans, cloth, etc.) for African slaves.

Triangle Trade Slaves were sold in Americas to provide plantation labor. Crops raised in Americas are sold to Europeans for gold and exchanged for goods.

Triangle Trade Europeans took by force gold and silver from native Americans Destroyed Aztec and Incan societies in the process. Spain grew extremely wealthy and powerful as a result.

Middle Passage The journey from Africa to the Americas for captured African slaves. Begins when Africans are captured Ends with being sold in the Americas About 20% would die along the route Between 1500 and 1870 about 9.5 million Africans will be brought to the Americas

Amistad We will see the journey of Africans through the middle passage and arrive in the Americas
