ELACC8RI1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. ELACC8SL6: Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. ELACC8L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. ELACC8L6: Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression. ELACC8W4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. ELACC8W5: With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed.

ACTIVATOR: COMMON EDITING MARKS Isn’t it frustrating when someone tries to tell you something but you can’t understand them at all? That is exactly what it is like when something written has errors. It does not make as much sense as it can. This is why you have to edit your paper. To the right are some common editing marks. These will be explained on the next slide.

COMMON EDITING MARKS Use this for the beginnings of sentences or proper Nouns that need capitalization. Put any missing end punctuation in a circle. Use this to add internal punctuation or missing words. Use this to let the writer know where to indent new paragraphs. Cross out the letter that needs to be lower case.

WORK PERIOD Any questions? Round Robin: You will now take turns editing a sample GMWA paper with your table mates. First, edit the first paragraph, then pass it to the student to your right. Next, edit the next paragrpah. Let’s see which table can finis first with all the appropriate corrections!!!

JEOPARDY RELAY You will be divided into 4 groups and line up. Each group will have one representative per question. When that question has been answered, everyone standing up will return to the back of their team. The goal is to gain the most points you can, but remember, everyone will have a chance to answer to support your team!

HOMEWORK Due Wednesday: Choose your partners wisely. You will work in a group of up to 4 students to create a 12- question quiz. Each student is to create at least 3 questions for the quiz. (Divide the questions equally among yourselves.) You must also create a key. You will have to write a 3+ sentence justification of the right answers. You and your group will receive additional points toward their team’s grade for including higher-order-thinking questions. (Quiz Grade)
