Three Networks Servicing R&E Communities in Taiwan  Three networks in Taiwan provide network services for the R&E communities  TANet, funded by the Minitry of Education, leases bandwidth from commodity vendors. It services higher education and K-12.  TANet2, funded by the National Science Council, is operated by the NCHC  ASNet, gets funding largely from the NSC, is managed by the Academia Sinica  The circuit acquisition is thus sometimes a tripartite effort, done jointly

TANet2 and TWAREN  TANet2 is a national research network. It has been in operation since 1998 to service R&D  TWAREN is the next version of TANet2, re- designed with three levels of services – production, research and optical networks. TWAREN (TaiWan Advanced Research & Eduction Network)  The production network of TWAREN has just begun operation. Its research network and optical network are being implemented.  The two networks share the same circuits for international connectivity. Both managed by the NCHC.

 Trans-Pacific link to Seattle is at STM-16  Link from Seattle to STARLight was upgraded to STM-4.  An additional 1GbE lightpath from CANARIE serves as TaiwanLight TANet2 TWAREN Taipei StarLight StarTap CA*Net4 Abilene Vancouver Edmonton Calgary Winnipeg Montreal Halifax Toronto STM-16 (2.5G) 1 GbE Connections to North America for TANet2 and TWAREN STM - 4

 For ASNet, link to STARLight to be upgraded to 1.2 Gbps in April, 2004 (currently at STM-4)  Commodity links (dotted red line) for both netoworks total 3.7 Gbps StarLight StarTap CA*Net4 Abilene 1.2 Gbps Connections to North America for TANet and ASNet ASnet TANet 2.5 Gbps 1.2 Gbps Palo Alto

Connections to Other Regions  ASNet (operated by ASCC, seat of APAN-TW NOC)  To date, connections to Asia and Europe are largely made by ASNet. Joint leasing by the three networks will be common in the future  Connections to Asia  APAN Tokyo-XP: 155  622 Mbps (Feb, ‘04)  Hong Kong: 155 Mbps  Singapore: 155 Mbps (activated )  AMSIX (Amsterdam, activated in April 2004).  The 155 Mbps link to UK will be terminated in March 2004.

International Links from Taiwan -- A Summary Hong Kong HARNet Amsterda m AMSIX 622 Mbps 2.8 Gbps Singapore SingARE N Tokyo- XP Taiwan 2.5 Gbps 1.2 Gbps 155 Mbps 622 Mbps 1GbE Lightpath

Meshes in with APAN Infrastructure  Taiwan is a well-connected APAN member  Meshes well in the APAN infrastructure fabric  For other R&E networks in Asia Pacific region, Taiwan is very well-suited as an access point for peering and transit; and its multiple links as backup routes for other links.  Asian-Pacific PoPs Links to HK and Sg make TW, HK and SG equivalent PoPs which may serve as access points for other APAN networks
