2 Careers In Banking Purpose of this workshop –Identify the importance of goals in your personal and professional life –Identify the kind of goals you should have –Identify the characteristics of goals –Provide a working knowledge of how to set goals –Provide a working knowledge of how to reach goals

3 Are Goals Really Necessary? The target you can’t see –So you think you can hit it Activity or accomplishment –Wandering around No Goals – No Game –How do you know what the score is Harness the power

5 Characteristics of Goals Gotta be big –To be effective, they gotta create excitement Beaten by the underdog Identify what’s really important “Make no small plans for they have no capacity to stir the human soul”. –Door stop of a horseshoe

6 Characteristics of Goals, cont. Goals must be long range –Others can stop you temporarily – you are the only one who can do it permanently Tasks vs. goals We all can’t be great at everything –One obstacle at a time –Are you going on a trip or a journey?

7 Goals must be daily If you expect to make it, you have to work towards your goal everyday through objectives –Daily objectives keep you on track –Daily objectives provide you focus –I don’t want to get up this morning!!! Dedication, discipline and determination –ATTITUDE “Tell me about your long term goals and your short term goals”

8 Goals must be specific General goals do not provide anything to measure against –Examples: High paying job More for the community Job which allows me to use all my skills –Your turn 5ft wall 9ft wall 20ft wall

9 Can goals be negative? The answer is yes if –They are too big or unrealistic Set them high but reachable –The goal is out of your field of interest Trying to please someone else –The belief that luck is involved Identify your objectives Use and sharpen your talents Dedication and commitment

10 Setting your Goals Commit to paper –Listing your goals on paper creates commitment and provides something to focus on –List them in order of importance –List the obstacles that stand in your way This provides the ability to identify your daily objectives and tasks –Focus on the horizon Begin with the end in mind

11 Reaching your goals Just a little further –Continuous improvement Keep the end in mind List your accomplishments –Reflect back Keep score Celebrate small victories
