Parallel Structure

What is parallel structure and why is it used? Parallel structure means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance. This can happen at the word, phrase, or clause level. Using a parallel structure makes the writing clearer and easier to understand.

Parallel Structure When a sentence contains a series of equal and related items, the items should be in the same form. That is, each item should match grammatically with the others.

Words and Phrases Match the –ing form of words. Mary likes hiking, swimming, and she likes to ride bikes. Which item is not matched? How would you match it?

Words and Phrases Match the infinitive form. Mary likes to hike, to swim, and riding bikes. What is not matched? How would you match it?

Do not mix forms Do not mix the forms in sentences. Example: The production manager was asked to write his report quickly, accurately, and in a detailed manner. What is not matched? How would you match it?

Do not mix forms The teacher said that he was a poor student because he waited until the last minute to study for the exam, completed his homework in a careless manner, and his motivation was low. What doesn’t match? How would you fix it?

Clauses A parallel structure that begins with clauses must keep on with clauses. Example: The coach told the players that they should get a lot of sleep, that they should not eat too much, and to do some warm up exercises before the game.
