Presentation transcript:

What is Mail Watch? Mail Watch is a new scheme being trialled in Winchester where Hampshire Constabulary, Neighbourhood Watch and Royal Mail are working together to reduce rural crime and help residents to feel safer in their communities. Every day on their rounds, our postmen and women are the eyes and ears of their local communities. Mail Watch formalises the relationship they already share with the police and Neighbourhood Watch.

Why Mail Watch? To extend the “eyes and ears” of NW: Post Office staff visit communities on a more regular basis They get to know their communities on their regular delivery routes They can spot suspicious activity or evidence of possible theft They can spot vehicles parking and driving in unusual places Sharing information with NW and the police will help reduce crime and opportunities for crime.

How does Mail Watch work? Mail Watch enables postmen and women to report suspicious incidents or low-level crime to the police by calling 101 and then quoting a dedicated Mail Watch incident number. Alternatively, they can report incidents to Neighbourhood Watch volunteers, who will then liaise with police if necessary.

What are the signs to look out for? Sheds, garages, barns with signs of disturbance Oil tanks with signs of activity/damaged shrubs Broken doors or windows to a property Vehicles driving or parked suspiciously – registration details please! Nottingham Knockers – cold callers Large quantities of scam mail being delivered to a home

When should Mail Watch be used? For reporting suspicious incidents For concerns for welfare For intelligence dissemination by the police

Any questions?
