The Construction of the Qinghai - Tibet Railway and It's Impact on Tibetan Development The Qinghai to Tibet railway began full operation from July 1, It symbolises Tibet's historical inaccessibility via railway. The total distance from Lhasa to Xining by railway is 1956 kilometres, and it is the world's highest railway extending for the longest distance through a plateau of permanent frost.

Origin of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway The qinghai-tibet railway, implement the strategy of west development is a landmark project, is one of the four big projects in the new century in China. Which east qinghai xining, west to Lhasa, 1956 km. Among them, 814 kilometers from xining to golmud is PuTong in 1979 and put into operation in Golmud to Lhasa, qinghai-tibet railway from golmud in qinghai province, the red platform, wudaoliang, tuotuo river on, wild goose Shi Ping, climb mount tunggula, then through the Tibet autonomous region anduo, naqu, male, yambajan to Lhasa, 1142 km. The new line of 1110 km, was formally started on June 29 in Qinghai-tibet railway is the world's highest and longest plateau railway line. On July 1, 2006 officially opened to traffic operation

Project Monitoring The railway is to extend 1,118 km. A section extending 960 km has an elevation of over 4,000 meters and teems with plants, grasses, water and wildlife; and a section stretching 550 km features permafrost. To cope with this situation, environmental experts were organized to form a group in Golmud City to study ways and means with regard to the protection of the environment. The construction units need to report on the progress and the construction schemes to the headquarters and organize training in permafrost theory and countermeasures for bid winners. Noted scholars in these fields were invited to lecture. Necessary tests were organized and those who flunked these tests were disqualified from participating in the work. “We have full confidence in coping with permafrost and protecting the environment there,” said a specialist named Zhang. “When the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is built, an ecological corridor will take shape Protecting the Environment and Water A recent survey shows construction of the railway is not causing pollution to environment and river water. Instead, plants and wildlife receive due protection. According to Lu Chunfang, his headquarters has introduced an environmental protection system that proves effective. “Construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway will combine protection of the environment and waters with construction,” Lu said. “We adopt a method used to build river bridge piers without letting cement pollute the river water. In addition, we use phosphorous-free detergent and wastewater will be treated before being discharged.” Editem

Signicance The newly launched railway will promote the intergration of Tibet with the interior of China and help pave the way for trade between the country and India and Nepal and India, and turn Tibet into the frontier for southern Asinan economic communication.

Let us take the protection and development of Tibet !
