Mrs Young welcomes you to the Geography/Modern Studies Information Evening 06/06/12
Geography/Modern Studies– Intermediate, Higher and Advanced Higher Huge step up from Standard Grade – students need to be aware of that NOW. Hard graft and 100% commitment starts NOW. It is not possible to ‘wing it’ this year!
How can parents help? Check homework diaries regularly Help children manage their time and meet their deadlines. Read over their practice essays Ask when their NABs are and double check what they say in their homework diaries!
Homework Homework is an essential part of the course work – it is not an option! Reading over and learning the week’s work EVERY week will help them accumulate the necessary knowledge and understanding that will help them to meet the demands of the course. Revision/study techniques eg mind-maps are vital. There is a huge volume of detail to learn!
Part time jobs cost grades Particularly evening shifts more than once a week. If finances dictate a part time job, please encourage and assist your kids to time manage their homework and revision.
Reminder to pupils - Study periods are NOT free periods!
Attendance in class is vital. They can’t learn with their peers if they are not there! They will miss explanations, discussion and debate, and support. If they are absent it is the students’ responsibility to catch up on work missed. Teachers will be happy to help if asked.
NABs must be passed! Internal Assessments, known “fondly” as NABs – students get 2 attempts. Pass or fail only, however, they give an indication of work rate and application. NAB’s are a prerequisite for presentation for the final exam! This is an SQA rule – not ours! Students will always be given at least two weeks notice of a NAB date. Parents will be contacted by letter if their child fails a NAB, so that they can assist their child prepare for the final second attempt. If a student is dropped down a level their parents will be lettered informing them of the fact.
Supported Study Help is available at key times during lunchtimes and after school. Please encourage attendance. If you believe they need help and are not asking themselves then give me a call or send me an – the sooner the better!
Most importantly! Be there for them! Have the patience of a saint! Be prepared for irrational behaviour! Listen! Don’t be shy about looking for additional support. Let them blow off steam now and again. Working hard can sometimes mean playing hard too! They are under pressure!
