The Servant of the Mission She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21)  Emphasis on His human nature – 100% man  Why we celebrate Christmas  These words indicate that a baby is coming into the world  His purpose for coming? To give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45) To give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45) Problem – Psalm 49:7 says “no man can redeem his brother”? Problem – Psalm 49:7 says “no man can redeem his brother”? So, how could he give his life a ransom for many? So, how could he give his life a ransom for many?

The Savior of the Mission She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21)  The name Jesus means “Yahweh saves”  His name was indicative of His mission  Notice the next phrase: “for He will save” Notice the play on words Notice the play on words Yahweh saves  He (Jesus) will save Yahweh saves  He (Jesus) will save  Emphasis here on His divinity – 100% God  This should already be obvious from the previous verse “the Child…conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:20) “the Child…conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:20)

The Significance of the Mission She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21)  Why did He come? To save (Luke 19:10) Where did He come from? Where did He come from? See John 17:5 and Philippians 2:6-8See John 17:5 and Philippians 2:6-8  When did the mission begin? Winter of 4-5 BC? Winter of 4-5 BC? See 1 Peter 1:18-21; Acts 2:23-24; Revelation 13:8 (NIV, KJV or NKJV); Hebrews 4:3. Why is this significant? The Surety of the Mission She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21)  This is not “might save” or “hopes to save” but “will save”  See John 6:38-40; Ephesians 1:11; John 17:4. Did Jesus accomplish His mission? Did Jesus accomplish His mission? Can we be confident in the saving power of Jesus Christ? Can we be confident in the saving power of Jesus Christ?

The Subjects of the Mission She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21)  Who are His people? Israel only? Have you been saved from your sins? Are you Jewish? See John 17:6-9; John 10:16, See John 17:6-9; John 10:16,  When were the subjects of the mission chosen? The Scope of the Mission She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21)  What are we saved from? Our sins. Justification = saved from the penalty of sin Justification = saved from the penalty of sin Sanctification = saved from the power of sin Sanctification = saved from the power of sin Glorification = saved from the presence of sin Glorification = saved from the presence of sin Do you desire all three? If not, you don’t desire salvation or the Savior Do you desire all three? If not, you don’t desire salvation or the Savior  God is outside of time. Thus, there was never a time when the Son of God did not plan to die for His people, and there was never a time when His people were not chosen.  His entire purpose for coming to Earth was to die (Isaiah 53:10)  This Christmas, try to imagine…
