Why work with CWS? Is it as difficult as it seems?

Introduction I am Andrew Southall At Exeter University I chair the External Advisory Committee for SECaM I have an Hon. Research Fellowship with CWS I am interested in Business Engagement

Why work with CWS? International Capability but grounded in UK context Constantly looking over the horizon but also working on current issues (PR09) Able to challenge the status quo and provide fresh perspective Adding value and reach

Is it really that difficult? Well, NO it need not be Finding the right entry point into the organisation is key, as is finding the right people to work with Good relationships take time (my own experience is based on over 14 yrs!)

What are the starting points Graduate Placements and Recruitment Shell Technology Enterprise Programme Graduate Business Partnership Modular based training MSc full and part time Knowledge Transfer Partnership Sponsoring a Chair

Making the first move Contacting the School Contacting CWS Talking with Dragan and David Visiting the Centre with a real issue Asking for support for tenders and bids UKWIR collaboration Expert Witness support

It takes two to tango! CWS wants to keep its research grounded in real world practice It should always create win-win You are buying thinking time and the opportunity to see things differently You can “sell” differentiation and value adding thinking

And Finally CWS want to understand business needs and drivers CWS can provide high value benefits CWS wants to do business with YOU!! CWS is an important part of the university and its drive to be in the top 10 in the UK Here’s to another 10 yrs!!

Centre for Water Systems The future is bright!

CWS’s Future Interdisciplinary nature of research Just a few key areas of interest: Climate change and its impacts on water management Sustainability into practice Risk and uncertainty Decision support systems Work closely with industry, government, local authorities Develop strategic relationships

Thank you to: Arup for sponsoring this event Current and past CWS members Current and past academic and industrial collaborators The university and SECaM for support given over the years Alix and the team for organising the event

Thank you all for coming here tonight! Enjoy the rest of the evening!
