What?...is the control by one country of the political, economic and/or cultural life of another country or region When? ’s to 1920’s Who?...Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Italy Imperialism in Africa

Why?... (3 G’s) 1. European countries wanted power and prestige 2. Africa had a large amount of natural resources that could be made into manufactured goods 3. Europeans’ goods were sold in Africa large profits 4. one European nation would take land just to prevent another European nation from taking it

Pan-Africanism-the desire to unite and foster pride among people across Africa Nationalism-pride or devotion to your country...across Africa the goal was to counter the loyalty many had for their tribe over the laws of the nation

countries were not ready for self-rule- poorly trained or corrupt leaders many different cultures, languages and tribes forced to live in the same area tribal loyalty over loyalty to the country poor or failing infrastructure(highways, hospitals, etc) foreign involvement (unfair loans, support for poor leaders, lack of help when needed) Problems faced by new nations
