Tech Day Intro July Peter Kunszt News and Updates

Reports and Proposals 6 th Call, our role How to evaluate SyBIT Situation New webpage Wiki migration to 4.2 Tech Day July

Immediate Reports Scientific Report is due now (July 15) I am assembling it and will send the draft to sybit-all for comments by this Friday SyBIT needs to put in a project plan for SNSF and SEB for (End August) I am assembling that as well and will send it first to the coordinators and then to all in July- August Tech Day July

RTD Data Publication Plan SNSF requested a plan from the RTDs to publish their research data SyBIT can help in this with technology and support – sustained publication as well But at least SyBIT should be informed of these – our job is to aim for some consistency and we may have to support published data services Tech Day July

SystemsX.ch 6 th Call 6 th call for RTD projects is out now, deadline August 25 Expect 10 new projects by Jan. 1 st for us to support Expect ~5 of the current 8 1 st -round RTDs to continue and 5 new RTDs I have promised assistance during proposal writing already, expect requests in the first 3 weeks of August! Assess what can we do in SyBIT for the RTD Assess what they should request from SystemsX.ch In average we have 0.9 FTEs per project for NO HARDWARE THIS TIME! (OC) Tech Day July

Assessment Guidelines SyBIT does non-competitive stuff We do not compete on scientific systems biology publications with the scientists we support (obvious but needs to be restated) They should plan for bioinformatics research, new algorithms and models We can provide infrastructure interfaces, data management, automation, basic statistics and visualization, standardized bioinformatics analysis The borderline is a broad grey strip! An individual person might do both, that is not a contradiction! Tech Day July

SyBIT evaluation metrics SNSF has requested input on how to evaluate SyBIT – last time the metrics were wrong Suggested new metrics – please comment Direct acknowledgements, co-authorships, own publications and citations Number of successfully concluded projects Number of researchers that interact with SyBIT Software and services developed and documented The number of services in operation and their usage Infrastructure provided to SystemsX.ch researchers through SyBIT Education activities by SyBIT Standards being developed, used and promoted Sustained contribution acquired by partner institutions 3 rd party funding and industrial collaborations Tech Day July

SEB Interaction SEB also regularly forgets what SyBIT is Members change and they also forget Repeat our mission to them (I have prepared a set of guidelines, you will receive those as well) There is no SyBIT management board Even Ron forgot that we agreed to discontinue it There were simply no difficult items to decide on SEB can take on the role of supervising SyBIT without too much effort Tech Day July

Funding Less than for 2012! But we will need to support more projects! So: no more infrastructure funding, only people. We can help in getting the money. Continue to improve efficiency Motivate institutions to start paying for support personnel like us, we need to be sustained by the end of 2016! Is your job safe? Mostly yes.. Decision on new projects will only be communicated on December 16!!! So I will try to keep everyone as is, hoping for the best. Tech Day July

Efficiency We need to come back to the idea of ‘short projects’ : Be able to do periodic reprioritization Be able to put things on hold for a short period 3 months reporting and project reviews No limit on ‘extensions’ but need to plan next 3 months again Remain fully transparent, more communication to SEB and Pis Agree on SAME documentation and communication channels in Lausanne, Zurich and Basel ! Tech Day July

Improving Webpage SyBIT.net Being revamped to show software we do, link to the relevant download sites I will contact you for text and images, just respond to please This is the public face of SyBIT, which people can refer to also in publications Can link to project individual pages (like MorphoGraphX.org) and of course Expasy Tech Day July
