Vesuvius erupts over Pompeii On August 24, 79 A.D. Mount Vesuvius erupts in southern Italy, turning skies to darkness over the city of Pompeii. “You could hear the shrieks( 尖叫 )of women forever“ wrote the younger Pliny. “Cries of children and shouts of men, some praying to die from the very fear of dying. Many lifted their hands to the Gods, imagining there were no Gods left anywhere and at last, an eternal( 永恒的 )night has come upon the world“. Roughly half the citizens blindly escaped towards the sea, but more than 2,000 were buried under 7 feet of lava ash and pumice( 浮石 ). 1,700 years later the excavation( 发掘 )of Pompeii presented a picture of the everyday life an ancient civilization, so freshly preserved in sudden death, as almost to remain living forever.

I shall never forget my first sight of an volcanic eruption. That night I was about to go back to sleep when suddenly my bed began shaking and I heard a strange sound like a railway train passing my window. Then my bedroom became as bright as day. When I ran out of my house, I found the boiling rock erupted from a volcano and red hot lava was fountaining hundreds of meters into the air. The lava flowed slowly like a wave down the mountain, burying everything in its path under the molten rock. It was an absolutely fantastic sight. An unforgettable experience
