What is Rheumatic fever? An inflammatory disease that is caused by an untreated Streptococcus bacteria (such as strep throat or scarlet fever).

Why is it an autoimmune disease? The bacterium by the Streptococcus, triggers the immune response and the antibodies attack host cells, because it resembles part of the infection.

Symptoms Abdominal pain Joint pain and swelling Nose bleeds Skin rash & nodules Shortening of breath & chest pain Fever Enlarged heart/Heart murmurs

Treatments Its treated with antibiotics such as: Penicillin Erythromycin Sulfadiazine Aspirin Bed Rest There is no true diagnosis of this illness. Treatments reduce tissue damage from inflammation, and lessens pain and symptoms.

Facts It is responsible for many cases of damaged heart valves and heart failure. It mainly affects children from 6-15 years of age. It can effect the nervous system, such as involuntary movements and twitching. It can lead to Rheumatic Arthritis or Disease.
