CSE 1105 Week 1 Catalog Course Description CSE 1105, 1 hour credit. Introduction to basic engineering concepts. Opportunities are provided to develop skills in oral and written communication, and department-specific material. Case studies are presented and analyzed. One of CE1104, CSE 1104, EE 1104, IE 1104 and MAE 1104 is required prerequisite or co-requisite.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Course Objectives Students will gain an understanding of –engineering approach ( design, ethics, problem solving and creativity ) –engineering disciplines, using laboratory examples & experimentation. Emphasis is placed on team-building.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Course Objectives In short, this class is planned as preparation for the program (CSE, CS or SE).

CSE 1105 Week 1 Prerequisites None. Note: the course is intended for students pursuing a degree in the Computer Science and Engineering Department.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Textbook Readings will be from the web, UTA Library on-line materials, and textbooks. Engineering Ethics, Fledderman, Prentice Hall, Design Concepts for Engineers (2 nd edition), Horenstein, Prentice Hall, 2002.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Textbook Optional: HTML & XHTML, The Definitive Guide (4 th or 5 th edition), Musciano & Kennedy, O’Reilly 2002 Introduction to Word 2002, Kunicky, Prentice Hall, Introduction to Excel 2002, Kunicky, Prentice Hall, Introduction to Powerpoint 2002, Leifer, Prentice Hall, 2003.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Time to Allow for CSE courses In general for the College of Engineering, 1 hour of class time and 2-3 hours of out-of-class time are planned each week for each credit hour of class.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Time to Allow for CSE 1105 CSE 1105 carries one hour credit, and has effectively 3 hours of work (lab lecture and lab) per week. If not completed each week, work should be done outside of that allotted time, but before 1105 meets the following week (unless specifically stated in the lab write-up).

CSE 1105 Week 1 Scheduled Times for CSE 1105 Lab lecture times : Wed 4:00 – 4:50 Thurs 9:30 – 10:20 Thurs 4:00 – 4:50 Lab times: Wed 10:30 – 12:20 Wed 2:00 – 3:50 Wed 6:00 – 7:50 Thurs 10:30 – 12:20 Thurs 2:00 – 3:50 Thurs 6:00 – 7:50 Mix And Match

CSE 1105 Week 1 Tentative Schedule

CSE 1105 Week 1 Lab Notes for Week 1 A Word file containing the Lab Notes for the next week* will be available on the class web site each Tuesday, for viewing, downloading (and therefore for printing). Print a copy to bring to your lab session each week. * This week you can find the Lab Notes for Week 1 on the class web site. A handout of the Lab Notes for Week 1 will be available in this week’s lab sessions.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Lab 1 - CSE 1105 Getting Started with Accounts & Tools This lab will be an opportunity to set up your Exchange and omega accounts. It is important that you begin to become familiar with Unix, so this week you will start to become familiar with UTA’s Unix machine omega. Task #1 Set Up Your Exchange account All students registered for this class should have been assigned an account on UTA’s Exchange …..

CSE 1105 Week 1 Slides for Week 1 Lab Lecture Powerpoint slides for today’s class will be available after class on the class web site, for viewing and for downloading (and therefore for printing if you wish).

CSE 1105 Week 1 Lab Lecture in Week 2 In the lab lecture of Week 2, the lecture will begin the sequence on Web Design. Lecturer will be Ray Springston, CSE faculty member. Optional text: HTML & XHTML or other HTML textbook. Note: no CSE 1104 class in Week 2 but CSE 1105 lab lecture and lab will meet.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Computer Use Proficiency (CUP) CUP, as required by the University, is demonstrated for CSE majors in CSE So, demonstration of proficiency in (1) word processing, (2) spreadsheets, (3) library skills, (4) use of the internet and (5) are required for satisfactory completion of the course, but measurement of these skills will not enter into the computation of the final grade.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Computer Use Proficiency (CUP) During labs in Weeks 1 and 2, the lab assignment is to demonstrate the ability to do word processing using Word and start to manipulate a spreadsheet using Excel. Later in 1105, there is a lab assignment involving finding information on the internet and using the UTA Library on-line resources for research.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Grading Grades will be letter grades ‘A’ through ‘F. The course grade is composed of: Laboratory assignments: 80% Final exam: 20% If you miss a lab period, you can try to attend another lab during the same week; Victor to check. If you miss the week, you may be able to attend an Open Lab (dates TBD). Not all labs can be made up.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Academic Honesty The College of Engineering Statement of Ethics is found on the 1105 class web site. It covers ethical behavior in a student role: CHEATING on quizzes or exams, PLAGIARISM, or COLLUSION will not be tolerated at UT Arlington [Student Handbook p. 92]. The ethics statement you are signing for CSE 1104 will suffice for CSE If not in CSE 1104 this semester, then you should read, sign, and return the statement in CSE 1105 (turn in at lab lecture next week).

CSE 1105 Week 1 Contacting the Instructors will be the best way to communicate with your instructors outside of class. For this communication, use the addresses: or There will also be several teaching assistants (TAs) working with this class in various capacities. for the TAs will be provided as needed. Always begin the subject line with “1105”. NOTE: Assignments should be submitted to the addresses specified for each one. Credit will only be given for work submitted to the correct address.
