What was the author’s purpose for writing this selection? To teach people about how the children of Iceland help the baby pufflings go to sea for the winter.

When it is time for Halla and her friends to get out their flashlights and boxes for the nights of the pufflings, and what does this mean?

The pufflings leave their burrows for their first flight. Most of the birds splash land in the sea below, however some get confused by the village lights and crash-land in the village. The children rescue the baby birds and take them to the beach to set them free at sea.
