National professional NGO Established in global chapters

To design and build medical equipment that can be easily assembled and used in developing nations To share our designs with the world at large To inspire others with the idea that inadequate access to health care is the root of poverty

Past Accomplishments Designed an ECG test system that was adopted by the national chapter Developed DIY ultrasound gel for neonatal care Recipient of the YesYous $1000 award Formulated hospital safety and adequacy protocol, which was adopted by Global Healing for hospitals in Vietnam Earned over $5000 in grants for projects over the last 6 years

TED Talk Nikolai Begg: A Tool to Fix One of the Most Dangerous Moments in Surgery

Weekly Meeting Agenda 6:10–6:20General announcements and attendance 6:20–7:00Public health presentations 7:00–8:00Project group meetings Some project group meetings will be held outside of class.

Grading 2 units of P/NP credit NP if your total grade is less than 70%. Meeting attendance: 40% Project participation: 40% Public health presentation: 20%

Attendance (40%) Attend the weekly meetings. –Public health presentations, guest speaker sessions, and project group meetings are valuable resources for you to make the most out of your time here. You are expected to show up at project group meetings and building sessions. Up to 3 excused absences (e.g., exams and emergencies) Each unexcused absence is minus 10% from your total grade.

Project Participation (40%) EWH members must be active in at least one project. Projects are assigned based on preference and availability. We will try to accommodate everyone’s requests. Graded on effort Two open project groups: –Electronics (Eric) –HIV diagnostics device (Yash)

Electronics Learn about concepts related to basic circuitry and hands-on applications such as breadboarding and soldering Build ECG simulators which will be shipped (functional or not) to third world countries

HIV Diagnostics Device Design a compact, cheap microfluidic device to diagnose whether someone has HIV through saliva sampling After learning about AutoCAD, you will either create your own AutoCAD device as a team or expand on previous year’s device. Devices will be 3D printed and tested for fluid control, etc.

Microcentrifuge Rapidly spins heterogeneous mixtures to separate materials. Draw microcentrifuge components in AutoCAD Manufacture prototypes in the machine shop

Public Health Presentations (20%) Expose members to current global health issues and challenges Present background, epidemiology, treatments, etc. on public health topics 15 minutes: 10 minutes lecture + 5 minutes Q&A

Public Health Topics Examples Ebola HIV/AIDS Tuberculosis Diabetes Malnutrition Malaria Rabies Vitamin B12 deficiencies Calcium deficiencies Occupational health problems Cancer Cataracts Arthritis Epilepsy Depression Environmental factors on health problems Neglected tropical diseases Microbiomes Pregnancy Water sanitation Disease eradication

Propose a Project! You should have a strong background in the field of your project. Consult us if you are interested! Examples of possible projects: –Collaborate with other groups to design GUIs and algorithms –Tissue culture hood –Micropipette

Things to Consider How many people do I need? What areas of expertise do I need? Expenses? Funding? Goals? –Publications –Prototyping –Educational –Or…

Big Berkeley An annual competition where students can submit proposals of “big ideas” that aim to solve current problems around the world. Contains several categories, the most relevant ones being: –Global health –Clean & sustainable energy alternatives –Information technology for society

Summer Institute Summer abroad program in third world countries (Nicaragua, Rwanda, and Tanzania) 1st month: technical/foreign language training 2nd month: engineering fieldwork in a local hospital

Weekly Meetings Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m in 224 Wheeler Hall At next week’s meeting, we will present public health presentation examples and you will meet your project group! Visit us at ewhberkeley.weebly.com/ for events and updates!ewhberkeley.weebly.com/
